Fang’s investigation revealed that the Atlas Network has systematically penetrated the top layer of the Trump administration through a wide range of political appointments of Atlas connections, including Sebastian Gorka, Trump’s former top counterterrorism advisor (who lost his job after his membership in a Nazi-linked group in Hungary was exposed — his wife Katharine has served as an advisor to Trump’s homeland security department and has been picked for the role of White House press secretary for US Customs and Border Protection); Vice-President Mike Pence; Education Secretary Betsy DeVos; and Judy Shelton, an Atlas Network senior fellow who advised the Trump campaign and transition team before being appointed chair of the NED — the White House now wants to appoint her to the Federal Reserve. In the US, the Atlas Network affiliates include a host of think tanks dabbling in climate science denial like the Cato Institute, Heritage Foundation, Heartland Institute and Competitive Enterprise Institute. Its most prominent British members are part of the Tufton Street network, including its global partner, the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) — situated around the corner from Tufton Street on Lord North Street. Further Atlas/IEA partners around Tufton Street include Taxpayers’ Alliance, Centre for Policy Studies, Adam Smith Institute, and Civitas, among many others. ”

The list includes the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a conservative policy group that was instrumental in convincing the Trump administration to abandon the Paris agreement and has criticised the White House for not dismantling more environmental rules. … Google said it was disappointed by the US decision to abandon the global climate deal, but has continued to support CEI. He also funded an array of conservative political action committees as well as groups that deny the existence of climate change and have worked to revoke former President Barack Obama’s regulations aimed at reducing planet-warming emissions. The company gave $300,000 to Government Accountability & Oversight, a group focused on countering organizations that oppose Trump administration environmental rollbacks. An additional $200,000 went to the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a free-market think tank that maintains that scientists have not proven that human activity is the main cause of rising emissions. And $130,000 was given to the Heartland Institute, which has sponsored climate-change deniers to speak at United Nations climate change conferences.»

With close links to hard core US climate change deniers, including funding from the US oil industry (CEO 2010), IJM is named after the Spanish philosopher Juan de Mariana, who defended private property and encouraged limits on government (Rothbard 2010). When the IJMwas launched, it began with a seminar against the Kyoto Protocol that was attended by climate change skeptic Christopher Horner from the Competitive Enterprise Institute. The center has also cosponsored several International Conferences on Climate Change organized by the Heartland Institute—the Chicago-based free market think tank at the forefront of denying the scientific evidence for man-made climate change in the US. “The two remaining think tanks of our sample are both established in 2007. Austrian Economics Centre (AEC) is settled in Vienna, Austria, and Europäisches Institut für Klima und Energie (EIKE) is headquartered in Hannover, Germany. AEC publicly states that its main goal is to disseminate the ideas of the Austrian School of Economics. Accordingly, it also promotes events like the “tax freedom day.” As the majority of the other organizations of the sample, the AEC has close links with the US right-wing countermovement, including The Heritage Foundation, Cato Institute, Competitive Enterprise Institute, or Americans for Tax Reform, amongst others as stated in its website. It also created the Friends of the Austrian Economics Center in the US to facilitate contributions from US donors. It is worthy to remember that some of the US organizations mentioned by AEC as “partners,” like Americans for Tax Reform, are considered to act as funding vehicles of the oil industry (Mayer 2017). ”

La humanidad se encuentra frente a una de las mayores disyuntivas que cabe imaginar. El sistema climático terrestre parece haber sido definitivamente desestabilizado, mientras la inmensa mayoría de la población vive ajena a un fenómeno llamado a marcar nuestras vidas de forma determinante y abrumadora. Comunidad científica, medios de comunicación y clase política se encuentran aturdidos por el fenómeno y sin respuestas adecuadas a la magnitud del desafío. Cuando las élites fracasan, es la hora de la gente.
